1. Just a week to go: Planica 2010
The FIS Ski Flying World Championships will take place from 18th-21st March in the Ponce valley. FIS Continental Cup Coordinator Sepp Gratzer recently inspected the competition site, especially paying attention to the modifications that have been made on the flying hill and to the snow conditions, before giving the green light for the largest sports festival in Slovenia this season to go ahead. This also means that the flying hill was issued with a new homologation certificate to replace the old one that expired on the 31st December 2009.
Preparations for the FIS Ski Flying World Championships 2010, which will begin with qualification on 18th March and with the opening ceremony in Kranjska Gora the same day, are running according to schedule. Jelko Gros, Chief of Competition, said: "Everything is running according to plan. The flying hill is being shaped with machines. We have even too much snow, three to five thousand cubic meters; therefore some of it has to be removed. Considering the weather forecast and a possible thaw, which may occur during competition days, we will calculate how much snow we will leave on the hill."
Competition for the individual world champion title awaits the competitors on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday team event will be held. An extensive accompanying program will be going on in Planica and Kranjska Gora, where Planica , in collaboration with municipality Kranjska Gora, will prepare a viewer village with an entertainment program from Thursday morning till Sunday evening. Advanced ticket sales are already underway around Slovenia and abroad. More than 450 journalists from all over the world have applied for accreditation.
How to get there: Planica, located in Slovenia in Central Europe, is surrounded by the peaks of Julian Alps and the Karavanke Mountains but it is still easily accessible. Motorways in Italy (Tarvisio), Austria (Villach) or Slovenia (Karavanke tunnel) are nearby. The nearest railway station is in Jesenice and the Ljubljana International Airport is a 45 minute drive to Planica whilst from the Klagenfurt airport it will take about 40 minutes.

2. Oslo 2011: Keys to Holmenkollen
"This is a great day, which we have looked forward to for a long time. We are impressed by Oslo Municipality's process in construction. The new Holmenkollen National Arena will be fantastic," said Svein Aaser, chairman of the board for the Oslo 2011 organizing committee as he, on 22 February, accepting the "key" to the new national ski facility from Jøran Kallemyr, commissioner for transport and the environment in the city of Oslo together with CEO of WSC, Åsne Havnelid.
Following an intense final stretch, the Holmenkollen project has completed the facility as promised for the Continental Cup and FIS World Cup events in March 2010. Heavy vehicles and equipment have been temporarily removed, but will be back again in April to complete the final touches before the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011.
"Now that the building site has been cleared, we can see how magnificent this will be. The facility is full of clever, modern details. We are currently moving in with temporary facilities, i.e. toilets, fences, food stalls, tents, etc., and starting to prepare the tracks, the ski arena and the ski jump," said Havnelid.
On 3rd March, the City of Oslo invited the public to the official opening of the new Holmenkollen National Arena. After the opening ceremony, Anette Sagen and 19 male ski jumpers opened the new ski jump. The arrangement ends with a prize ceremony and fireworks. A Norwegian media poll awarded Anette Sagen (25) the honor of inaugurating the new arena.

3. Innsbruck 2012 launches new Winter Youth Olympic Games Emblem
The Innsbruck 2012 Organizing Committee for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games (Innsbruck 2012) launched its new emblem at a Youth Olympic Games Night at the Austria House in Whistler, Canada.
In attendance at the launch were IOC Vice President and Chairman of Singapore 2010 Ng Ser Miang; IOC Coordination Commission Chairman for Innsbruck 2012 and FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper; Pernilla Wiberg, Innsbruck 2012 Coordination Commission Member; Austrian Olympic Committee President Dr Karl Stoss; and Tyrol Tourism Board Director Josef Margreiter.
Gian-Franco Kasper commented: "The Innsbruck 2012 emblem is a reflection of Innsbruck's history, region and nation and it symbolizes the journey to the first Winter Youth Olympic Games. It is a youthful emblem and a striking identity to be used by the Innsbruck Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee to reach out to young people around the world."
The design of the emblem reflects the vibrant, youthful city in the heart of the Alps combined with its traditional and natural way of life. The city's name, "Innsbruck", refers to its founding close to the bridge over the River Inn. Innsbruck relates this to its legacy as past Olympic Games hosts in 1964 and 1976 and the journey to the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012.
The Golden Roof, the most famous sight in Innsbruck, is an essential, unique part of the Innsbruck 2012 emblem. It symbolizes the well-known hospitality of the Tyroleans, and the golden colour represents excellence in sports and cultural events.
Youth Olympic Games Night at Austria House in Whistler
"Innsbruck is the perfect venue for the 2012 Olympic Youth Games", Gian-Franco Kasper emphasized in Whistler. "Innsbruck has great prerequisites. A few adaptations here and there - like on the ski jump in Seefeld - is all that's needed. Since Innsbruck has already hosted two Olympic Winter Games, they are well prepared for mega sporting events", Kasper added. A Tirolean delegation headed by Tirol's Governor Günther Platter and Sports Councillor Hannes Gschwentner met with IOC President Jaques Rogge in Canada to continue budget discussions.
As things stand now, Innsbruck's budget for the YOG will be around 25 Million Euros - the same amount that Singapore is planning to spend just on the opening celebration. The President of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010, Ser Miang Ng, also stopped by at the Austria House. The first Summer Games will take place August 14-26, 2010, in Singapore.

Successful Public Viewing in Garmisch
The public viewing represented the first appearance of GAP 2011 mascots, Ga and Pa, who became immediate favorites for children and youngsters present. Ga and Pa are snowballs, on the basis of an idea by double Olympic champion Rosi Mittermaier.
"Ga and Pa will ‘roll' through the country and spread the news of the upcoming FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011", said Gerd Rubenbauer, Chief of Media for GAP 2011. "Of course they also represent the two villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen." The colors red and blue are the colors of the ski clubs in the two districts. The red mascot is female, whilst the blue male version carries a beard and has a mischievous look. The mascots were designed by Amelie Neureuther and they will be available for sale - always as a couple - from May 2010.
Finally, the Public Viewing saw the launch of ticket sales for the 2011 Championships. For more information on the available tickets visit www.gap2011.com
