Flashback to The Beautiful Years At Les 2 Alpes Mondial Festivals This Autumn
Les 2 Alpes will flash back to the “beautiful years” when bright fluorescent ski suits, headbands and reflective sunglasses were all the rage 25 years ago when the French glacier resort stages its 17th annual ‘Mondial of Snowboard’ over the last weekend of October (27th to 29th) and its ninth ‘Mondial of Ski’ the following weekend (3rd - 5th November).
An exhibition of old pictures and old equipment will be staged to coincide with these Mondial events, along with the showing of classic ski movies during the Video Festival such as the so famous Apocalypse Snow trilogy.
Along with this flash back to the past, this year’s Mondial will emphasize modern winter sports art and design. There will be an exhibition of boards, made for a ‘Deck- on-Snow’ event and customized by 12 famous board artists such as Mist, Tilt, Truk, LeMush and Gum. At the ski event there will be six pairs of the Rossignol CREATE IT line and the opportunity to meet the artists during a prize-giving presented by Candide Thovex, on Saturday, November 4th.
Saturday will be a day especially dedicated to the girls. After choosing their equipment in the show rooms, professional French skiers and snowboarders such as Sandra Laoura, Vanessa Colletta, Sandrine Clavein will offer technical advice on the slopes.
Photographers will follow the girls around all day and there will be an evening get together for an exhibition of the pictures taken during that day. This will be followed by a video festival where movies such as Ro Cham Bo of the Miss Chief and the Kit girls’ video will be shown. This aims to be, “A unique moment to share with women who contributed to feminine winter sports masterpieces,” according to the resort.
Day passes are available for 23€ 80 and pre-reservation of gear loan cards and ski passes can be made on the web at www.mondialdusnow.com or www.mondialduski.com. Accommodation deals are available from 178 € / person (based on four people sharing) for three nights accommodation including three day ski passes. Contact [email protected]
Aspen To Make “Bold Environmental Statement” In 2006-7 Season Advertising
Aspen Skiing Company will put forward a message “…that’s bold and able to break through,” company boss Pat O’Donnell told the local Aspen Times.
Three advertisements with an environmental message will run in some of North America’s biggest ski publications, Ski and Outside magazines.
The adverts are to be “consistent with this community’s intense concern with global warming. The ads will steer readers toward a website that offers more information about global warming and, presumably, with actions people can take to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.£ said a company spokesman.
Aspen Skiing Company has been one of the North American ski industry’s most pro-active advocates of working to fight climate change and was the first Colorado resort to fully switch its power needs to renewable energy. A move followed by six more Colorado resorts in recent months.
Conversely the town of Aspen has some of the highest property prices in the world, and is a home to some of the country’s richest people who park their private jets at the town’s local airport.
The Aspen Times report notes that Aspen Skiing Company’s research has revealed that 30% of surveyed skiers said they were concerned about environmental issues when considering where to ski, up from 10% in 2000.

Gulmarg Brings In International Experts To Lead Mountain Operations
The Himalaya’s only resort with international scale ski-lift infrastructure, Gulmarg in Kashmir, India has announced snow safety and grooming plans for its second winter of full operation with its new goindola lift, the world’s highest serving a ski area.
“International experts from the USA, with experience in high altitude snowpacks similar to Gulmarg, will monitor safety over the 2006-2007 winter” says Farooq Shah, Director of Jammu & Kashmir Tourism.
Seven international Ski Patrol and Snow Grooming experts will lead mountain operations over the peak winter period from 20 December 2006 to 20 March 2007.
The team of international experts has been assembled by Peter Robinson, an Australian who is assisting the resort in an honorary capacity. Says Robinson:
“Gulmarg already has a mountain and lift-accessed ski and snowboarding terrain equal to anywhere. In winter 2006-2007 Gulmarg will have world-class ski patrol and snow grooming expertise to match its fantastic terrain and abundant snowfall”.
“The increase in snow grooming this winter significantly broadens Gulmarg’s appeal to the intermediate skier and snowboarder market. Grooming of Mt Apharwat’s mid level and lower slopes this winter will also benefit advanced riders.”
“Even in paradise, not every day is perfect, and the bigger investment by the resort in grooming this coming winter will improve riding conditions on non-powder days for advanced as well as intermediate skiers.”
