The Reflex from Serre Chevalier
The Reflex from Serre Chevalier
Southern French ski area Serre Chevalier has an innovative new concept in skier safety training for 2006-7 which it has named ‘The Reflex’.
The Reflex area invites skiers to test their speed in order to control and improve their braking. This initiative intends to improve safety on the slopes with the motto, “If want to know how to ski, you must know how to brake.”
In a closed area, skiers take an 80m (250 feet) run-up then try to stop as quickly as possible. An indicator records the speed reached and a coloured area shows whether that speed has been controlled or not. Stop in the blue area and our speed is suitable to your ski level; stop in the red area and you should slow down and try it again.
A second area, the Arva Park also aims to increase skiers awareness of the reality of the mountain environment. It’s designed to help more advanced skiers gain back country skills before they go off piste. When you go backcountry, you should always wear an avalanche transceiver and the ARVA Park is a practice area where transmitters are buried under the snow. Skiers are invited to find them quickly.
